YAM Flag Contest Deadline Approaching

2019 Kansas Youth Art Month Flag Winner Lauryn Becker
2020 Youth Art Month Flag Theme: Take A Journey Through Art
Entries due to YAM Flag Chair by November 15th.

Here are some tips from Shawny Montgomery, teacher of last year’s winning artist!.

1) Talk it up! Tell them it will make them  famous as an amazing artist if they win.
2) Their work will be seen by thousands of people and even be in a national exhibit.
3) PRIZES, PRIZES & PRIZES! Elementary, Middle School and High School all have separate divisions so lots of winners.
4)You get the artwork back so you'll have an automatic YAM  display/ bulletin board for March!
5) Help them brainstorm, make a list on the board, include all things  Kansas and what it means to "Take a Journey with Art".
6) Make it important, but a grade on it, make them feel like commercial artists &  stress this is their opportunity to impress the customer.
7) Take some time in class to work on it, let them do some rough drafts in their sketchbook, talk to them about composition, symbolism, placement, perspective, color theory and craftsmanship. Help them come up with the best design.
8) Pack up your designs and mail them to Johnna Smith or send them digitally to her. (form link is below)
